I am a man and I hate shopping. Usually when we hit the malls with my wife after the first hour of shopping I go to my car and spend the next few hours reading in it. What is more interesting - I am not the only one doing so. Every time I see at least three other bored husbands reading.
I could not understand the excitement of my wife when finding some brand item on sale until it was time to shop for auto insurance myself. Oh, man you had to see me. I was calling insurance agents, asking friends for recommendation and browsing the internet in hunt for the best insurance rate. And I found it. The truth is - it is possible to find affordable car insurance that is easy on your pocket but you have to know where to look for it.
1. Internet - this is my favorite one.
All major insurance companies have websites where you can fill out a form and get a quote in a matter of minutes. It might be time consuming sometimes because as a general rule you need at least five quotes, but it is time well spent. If you don't have the time, though, you can go directly to websites like eSurance.com and InsureMe.com, fill out a form and get quotes from multiple insurers within minutes. These sites basically do the legwork for you. Try both ways when shopping for auto insurance.
2. Your insurance agent
When you have multiple quotes it is time to contact your insurance agent and ask him to give you a better deal. The more time you go accident-free the more you will be able to save on car insurance premium. When I first bought auto insurance I paid $600 for six months. Now, a few years later, for the same coverage I am paying half the money.
3. Internet - well... I know, I mentioned it already.
These are different types of websites, though. At ePinion.com for example you can read reviews of actual customers of insurance companies and compare the pros and cons of each insurer. The cheapest rate is not the only factor you should consider when making a decision. Equally important is the insurance company itself. It does no good if you get into a car accident in the weekend and have to wait until Monday to report it just because your cheap insurance company does not work Saturday and Sunday.
4. Friends and colleagues.
Especially here in the US almost everyone has a car. Since car insurance is mandatory in most states it means that you have a lot of people to talk to when it comes to renewing your auto insurance. Do not be afraid to ask and you will be surprised by what you will find out. People are usually passionate about their insurance companies. If they are not happy with them they will warn you to stay away from that particular insurer and vice versa.
5. Magazines, radio advertisements, billboards.
Just keep your eyes and ears open. The competition among insurance companies is fierce. Every year they come out with different offers to lure new customers. For example, Allstate were the first insurance company to offer accident forgiveness. A month ago when I was shopping for car insurance online I found out that almost all "A" rating insurance companies offer the same feature now just to keep up with the competition.
The old saying "shop until you drop" holds true when it comes to auto insurance. Start shopping early enough and you can end up with a significant savings on your auto insurance.
